While on a routine survey mission to the primitive planet of Nibiru, Captain James T. Kirk breaks the Prime Directive to rescue Spock from a dangerous mission. Returning to Starfleet headquarters, Kirk is stripped of his command and reassigned to the academy. In the U.K., rogue Starfleet officer John Harrison manipulates the father of a dying girl into carrying out a suicide bombing of Starfleet’s Section 31 facility in London; when Starfleet convenes an emergency meeting of its high-ranking officials, Harrison attacks with a gunship, killing many of the attendees, including Admiral Pike. Although Kirk manages to stop the attack, Harrison uses a transwarp beam to escape to the Klingon homeworld of Kronos… Fleet Admiral Marcus reinstates Kirk’s command and sends him on a secret mission to kill Harrison, warning that any complications could trigger a war with the Klingons. Now equipped with seventy-two long-range prototype photon torpedoes, the Enterprise speeds to Kronos, only to experience an engine malfunction, forcing the ship to drop out of warp. Deciding to capture Harrison instead, Kirk takes Spock and Uhura in a captured trader ship to Kronos, but they are intercepted by a squadron of Klingon Birds of Prey and ordered to land for interrogation. They are saved by the arrival of Harrison, who ruthlessly wipes out the Klingon soldiers – but on learning of the torpedoes aimed at him, he then surrenders to Kirk... Back on the Enterprise, Harrison reveals his true identity as Kahn, a genetically augmented superhuman who has been in cryo-sleep for three-hundred years after a failed attempt at ruling the Earth with his followers; Kahn advises Kirk to examine the torpedoes, and then gives him a set of spatial coordinates. The torpedoes are found to contain the sleeping forms of Khan's followers, each in suspended animation, whilst the coordinates lead to the location of a secret military shipyard near Jupiter, where a gigantic battleship, the U.S.S. Vengeance, is under construction. Kahn reveals that Admiral Marcus awoke him to utilise his superior intellect and savagery in developing advanced weaponry, using the sleepers as hostages; Kirk’s entire mission has been a ruse so that Admiral Marcus can provoke a war with the Klingons. Now commanding the U.S.S. Vengeance, Admiral Marcus arrives at Kronos and orders Kirk to hand over Kahn; when Kirk refuses, the admiral announces that he will kill Kirk and his entire crew. To stop Marcus’ insane plan, Kirk must join forces with Kahn – but such a deal with the devil comes at a terrible cost…
